Introduction

While Nepal is one of the most prominent trekking destinations for experienced climbers, as well as to those who are just starting out. Makalu Base Camp Trek is a naturally and culturally diverse region along with unexplored beauty, high mountain peaks, biological diversity, etc. Makalu Base Camp Trek is a fascinating and challenging trek to the base camp of Makalu (8,421m), passes through the Makalu Barun National Park which covers an area of 2330 sq. km extending around the Sankhuwasabha and Solukhumbu districts of Nepal. It offers the majestic panorama of the highest mountain in the world such as Mount Everest, Mount Lhotse, Mount Chamlang, mount Makalu itself.  The trail takes you through deep gorges, rich inexperienced forests, and colorful rhododendron blooming beneath white snow peaks to hypnotize you for a while. On the way, you may encounter rich wildlife, including the endangered red panda and musk deer, ghoral, Himalayan Tahr, and leopard. Makalu Barun National Park is home to 75 species of mammals, 400 bird species, at least 16 of them are extremely rare. The highlights of this beautiful trek include majestic mountains, peaceful forest, and a wide variety of plants and animals and the warm-hearted and hospitable people of different cast, Rai, Limbu, Newar, and Tibetan Buddhists. This trek takes you to the altitude of 5,140m, Makalu Base Camp. The best months for this trek are Sept-Dec, Feb-May.

Makalu Base Camp Trek is the perfect fit for the thrill seeker and has the enthusiasm to explore new places. The trek starts with a scenic drive to Tumlingtar from Kathmandu. The trek mostly goes along Arun Valley and Barun Valley which are two of the remotest parts of the country.  En route to Makalu Base Camp, we stop at several refreshing points including Seduwa, Tashi Gaun, Kauma Dada, Keke La Pass, Yangre Danda, Jark Kharka, etc. We traverse through different vegetation zones; from pristine forests of rhododendron, fir, birch, and pine. Stepping on the Makalu Base Camp and witnessing a mesmerizing view of surrounding beauty at the same time is a lifetime experience.

Food

The food menu is a mixture of traditional local, India, American and continental cuisines and the foods will be all home-cooked, hygienic, fresh, tasty and nutritious. You'll get the best dishes available at the teahouse or lodge including Bhat, Pasta, Cereals, Eggs, Noodles, Potatoes, Vegetables, Fried rice, Soup, etc. We recommend you to have organic and local food and also give the high-priority to lemon tea, hot lemon, garlic soup, green tea, ginger tea, etc to stay away from high-altitude problems. You'll have more and varieties of food options during your stay in Kathmandu.

Accommodation

Accommodations during the Makalu Base Camp Trek are at teahouses which will give you homely feel where you'll get a chance to experience the renowned Nepalese hospitality. All the teahouses are run by locals and provide all the basic facilities including a hot shower at a low extra charge. You'll find all the room simple and comfortable usually with two beds with mattress blanket and pillows. Some will have an en-suit bathroom but most have shared bathrooms with the squat toilet in mountain areas. When you're in Kathmandu, you'll be staying in a single room with attached bathrooms,  24 hours hot water, power,  TV, and laundry facility.

Day 2 : Fly or Drive to Tumlingtar , alt. 512m.
Day 3 : Trek to Seduwa , alt. 1650m.
Day 4 : Trek to Tashi Gaun , alt. 2200m
Day 5 : Trek to Kauma Dada , alt. 3500m
Day 6 : Trek over Keke la pass-ascend to Tutu La pass to Dobato 3610m.

Upon your arrival at the Tribhuvan International Aiport, one of our representatives will be waiting for you at the airport terminal with your name on board and welcome you. Then you'll be transferred to the hotel in our private vehicle. Overnight stay.


Day 2 : Fly or Drive to Tumlingtar , alt. 512m.

You'll meet your trek guide in the morning at the hotel.  After breakfast,  you'll be transferred to a domestic airport for your flight to Tumlingtar which rewards you with spectacular views of Ganesh Himal, Mt. Everest, Makalu, and Mt. Kanchenjunga. Overnight stay.


Day 3 : Trek to Seduwa , alt. 1650m.

The trek finally starts and we start to follow Arun River that leads us steep climbing route toward Num. It is a border of the Makalu Barun National Park. After 5 hours of continuous walk, we reach at Seduwa for an overnight stay.


Day 4 : Trek to Tashi Gaun , alt. 2200m

Today's walk is pleasant and easy about 3-4 hours that takes you to countryside farm villages. We walk gradually on a trail through the millet and rice fields take you to the Tashi Gaun. Overnight stay.


Day 5 : Trek to Kauma Dada , alt. 3500m

Trek from Tashi Gaun to Kauma Dada is a strenuous walk through the rhododendron and oaks forest, then leaving the dense forest and you'll also see traces of temporary made shepherd huts. Overnight at Kauma Dada.


Day 6 : Trek over Keke la pass-ascend to Tutu La pass to Dobato 3610m.

Today, we'll cross the pass of Keke La pass (4230m) Tutu-la (4,200m) which is going to be challenging. But the spectacular view of high Himalayas will be going to make your day even more joyful. Then we trek down to Dobato for an overnight stay. 


Day 7 : Trek to Yangre Kharka , alt. 3520m.

Trek to Yangre Kharka from Dobato takes around 6 hours. The trek comes across the rhododendron forest connecting us to Barun upper river valley. We will feel like gaining altitude while passing through a high and peaceful small village. Overnight at Camp.


Day 8 : Trek to Jark Kharka , alt. 4200m.

On the way to Jark Kharka, we pass through yak pastures, colorful rhododendron forests and boulder fields. Before hiking up to Makalu Base Camp, we spend one day at Jark Kharka.


Day 9 : Trek to Makalu base camp. alt.5000m.

Finally, we are making it to the Base Camp of Makalu Mountain. You can say that day 9 is the most important day of your itinerary.  From Jark Kharka, we continue up to Shershong and eventually to Makalu Base Camp. The trail is flat with icy glaciers the spectacular Himalayas accompanying us. On the way to base camp, you can see some of the best mountains in the region. Overnight at Makalu Base Camp.


Day 10 : Excursion around Makalu base camp, alt. 5000m

This is your free day at Makalu Base Camp, so you can spend the whole day by admiring the beauty of Makalu Base Camp and surrounding scenery. The spectacular scenery of Everest and Lhotse are the main highlights of the day. Overnight stay.


Day 11 : Trek to Yangre Kharka , alt.3520m

Just 2 days at Makalu Base Camp is not enough to admire the beauty of the region, so according to our itinerary, we have to descend downhill to Yangre Kharka. By enjoying high mountains and scenic trail, we arrive at Yangre Kharka for an overnight stay.


Day 12 : Trek to Dobato , alt. 3610m

From Yangre Kharka, we follow the downhill trail which goes through rock falls, green forests on our way towards Dobato. We follow the Barun Riverbank as we descend to Dobato for an overnight stay.


Day 13 : Trek to Kauma Danda , alt. 3500m

We descend back to Kauma Danda via Shipton-la and Thulo Pokhari for the overnight camp. Scenic trail and stunning mountain views are the main highlights of the day. Spend overnight at a lodge in Kauma Danda.


Day 14 : Trek to Seduwa, alt. 1650m.

After breakfast at Kauma Danda, we follow the downhill track through the farm fields to reach Seduwa village. On the way to Seduwa, we come across the hillside and local villages. Overnight stay at a lodge in Seduwa.


Day 15 : Trek to Num , alt.1560m .

We walk on a familiar trail down to Arun River, then crossing the Arun River, we go steep uphill. After 6 hours of continuous walk, we reach Num for an overnight stay.


Day 16 : Drive or fly to Tumlingtar , alt. 512m.

After breakfast at a lodge in Num, we start our journey early morning and follow the newly constructed road. It takes 4 hours to reach the beautiful village of Tumlingtar. Overnight stay at a hotel in Tumlingtar.


Day 17 : Drive back to Kathmandu. alt.1300m

This is the final day of Makalu Base Camp Trek, so we drive back to Kathmandu and after reaching the capital city, our representatives will help you to reach your next destination.

2009 Makalu base camp - 2016 Gosaikunda

De eerste trekking die ik gedaan heb met deze gids Bharat, nu mede uitbater van Nature explore was in 2009, Ik opteerde toen voor een trekking naar “Makalu basis kamp”(het betreft hem meer een tenten tocht). Ik had voor het agentschap gekozen nadat ik met de gids had gesproken en vastgesteld had dat hij kennis van zaken heeft. Het agentschap waar de gids toen werkte schoot tekort wat de voorzieningen betreft! Ik herinner mij dat bij aankomst aan het start punt ook het kookvuur gebroken was. Maar de Bharat heeft alles in goede banen geleid en bijgestuurd. Hij heeft er ook alles aan gedaan om het naar mijn wensen aan te passen. Ik heb er toen in dit mooie natuur gebied een prachtige, avontuurlijke en onvergetelijke trekking gedaan.
In 2016 heb ik een andere trekking gedaan met Bharat nu mede uitbater van dit agentschap. De trekking naar "Gosaikunda" was tot in de puntjes voorbereid. Eens onderweg heb ik geen problemen ondervonden ondanks de beperkingen na de aardbevingen heeft Bharat toch gezorgd voor een comfortabele trekking. Bharat is naar mijn mening een goede ervaren gids die zich volledig inzet om de behoeften van zijn klanten te verwezenlijken. Aan mijn vrienden beveel ik Bharat en zijn agentschap aan!
